Red Shirts

One issue that I feel needs to be addressed first is about the current political situation here in Thailand. Because of all the press coverage around the world depicting Thailand as a very unsafe place to visit everyone has a bad impression towards this amazing country.

Yes there are some problems in Bangkok where the Red Shirts are demonstrating against the current government and yes there have been some injuries and deaths because of all of this. Yes it has caused many businesses to close in Bangkok, but generally it is still safe, especially here in Phuket.

I get emails all the time from friends and family asking if I am alright and am I safe? Well the answer is always “Yes”. Phuket is a long way from Bangkok and so far there are no demonstrations here whatsoever.

However, Phuket has suffered enormously from the huge decline in tourism since this situation started. Many businesses here on the island have had to make cut backs. Reduce their outgoings by totally re-evaluating their monthly outgoings. There are numerous amounts of people losing their jobs because of this also, in fact the whole situation with the Red Shirts is extremely bad for the Thai economy, lets hope it all ends soon.

But in short… Phuket is Safe.
